Position Summary
This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College’s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.
- Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
- Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
- Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
- Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
- Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
- Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands-on training.
- Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
- Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Lived experience of Indigenous cultures, histories and knowledges and non-traditional knowledge systems, complemented by community connections and familiarity with the x?m??k??y??m (Musqueam Indian Band), S?wx_wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), s?lílw?ta?? (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) preferred; as well as Indigenous communities and organizations across British Columbia (preferred), and/or Canada. Experience working and building relationships with Indigenous people, communities, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, sustained over time rather than project-based. Demonstrated understanding of and adherence to cultural protocols governing when, how and by whom Indigenous knowledge may be shared,. Combination of experience, skills and knowledge of Indigenous knowledge system(s), Traditional Land Use and stewardship, decolonization, inter-generational trauma and the importance of positive self-concept in education. Experience with clean energy, environmental stewardship, impact assessment or resource development, and familiarity with how Indigenous communities engage as rights-holders, partners and proponents in renewable energy (preferred). Completion of a Master's Degree in Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, Law, Geography, Education or a related discipline; or significant professional experience in land stewardship, Indigenous governance or resource development in a capacity involving direct accountability to Indigenous communities. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous literature and issues related to Indigenizing and decolonizing higher education and trades and technology programming. Ability to teach Indigenous land relationships, stewardship practices and place-based teachings, with depth in the territories relevant to clean energy development in British Columbia. Ability to teach Section 35 rights, the duty to consult and accommodate, UNDRIP and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and the leading jurisprudence (Delgamuukw, Tsilhqot'in, Haida), and to connect these frameworks to current proponent–Nation dynamics in the energy sector. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relationship between traditional knowledge and intellectual property, research ethics in Indigenous communities, and inter-generational trauma-informed practice. Working knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and their implications for post-secondary education. Demonstrated practice in Indigenous pedagogies, including storytelling, land-based learning and relational and experiential approaches, as an established way of teaching. Recent experience teaching in a college, institute, university, adult education or community setting. Demonstrated skill in planning and delivering instruction, and in facilitating discussion, case study and presentation-based learning. Ability to guide all students, in respectful and ethical engagement with Indigenous knowledge. Ability to demonstrate judgment, diplomacy, and sensitivity in challenging conversations. Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Ability to adapt to change. Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both oral and written.
