Position Summary
This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College’s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.
- Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
- Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
- Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
- Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
- Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
- Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands-on training.
- Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
- Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or Automotive Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience or Red Seal Automotive Service Technician qualification.
- Three (3) or more years of current, hands-on industry experience in EV motor systems, including inspection, service, teardown, and reassembly of mechanical and electromechanical components.
- Strong foundational knowledge of modern EV motor principles.
- Working knowledge of high-voltage safety practices, including safe handling, isolation, and verification procedures.
- Experience using modern electrical and electronic test equipment and the ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Familiarity with software-assisted diagnostics, data logging, or controller-based fault identification (exposure to Python or similar tools is an asset).
- Demonstrated instructional ability, including experience mentoring, training, or supervising technicians or junior staff, with effective interpersonal and communication skills using the English language.
- Ability to create an inclusive, supportive learning environment, with evidence of commitment to team collaboration and ongoing professional development.
- Willingness to complete the BC Provincial Instructor Diploma (PID) or equivalent within a reasonable timeframe after appointment.
- Experience interfacing software with automotive tools, vehicle data, or embedded systems, including exposure to automotive diagnostic data such as OBD-II (preferred).
- BC Provincial Instructor Diploma (preferred).
- Professional Engineering Licence (Electrical Discipline) (preferred).
