Position Summary

This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College’s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.
  2. Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
  3. Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
  4. Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
  5. Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
  6. Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
  7. Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands-on training.
  8. Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  9. Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
  10. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Automotive Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience or Red Seal Automotive Service Technician qualification.
  • Three (3) or more years of recent, hands-on industry experience working with high-voltage battery systems, such as EV or energy-storage battery packs, including diagnostics, service, teardown, repair, and reassembly.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high-voltage safety practices, insulation systems, lock-out/tag-out procedures, and safe discharge/recharge protocols.
  • Experience with battery pack architecture, including cell types, module configurations, contactors, and interconnects.
  • Practical experience in battery diagnostics and repair, including fault isolation, module-level testing, and cell balancing techniques.
  • Experience using electrical and electronic test equipment relevant to HV battery systems (e.g., insulation testers, multimeters, battery analyzers), with the ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Willingness to complete the BC Provincial Instructor Diploma (PID) or equivalent within a reasonable timeframe after employment commences.
  • Demonstrated instructional ability and knowledge of principles of adult education.
  • Ability to create an inclusive learning environment while supporting a diverse student population.
  • Evidence of commitment to teamwork and ongoing professional development.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence or eligibility for registration as a P.Eng. in British Columbia, or registration/eligibility as an Engineering Technologist (preferred).
  • Experience working with Battery Management Systems (BMS) and CAN-bus–based diagnostic tools (preferred).
  • Prior post-secondary teaching experience, including lab-based or applied technical instruction (preferred).
  • Completion of recognized HV safety or EV certification training safety or EV certification training (preferred).
  • BC Provincial Instructor Diploma (preferred).
