Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing a number of kitchen related activities including pot washing, dish washing and general cleaning duties in accordance with all HAACP policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Collects used pots, pans, trays, dishes, kitchen equipment and other utensils from the kitchen and brings them to the washing area. Scrapes items to be washed and places dishes, trays, glasses and silverware in dishwashing machine.
  2. Washes, dries and distributes dishes into designated areas and arranges them in an orderly manner.
  3. Leaves the dish washing area clean at the end of the shift and ensures that the area including the floor, food wagons, storage racks, pot racks, sinks, counters and dishwashing machine are clean at all times.
  4. Ensures the dishwashing machine is in good working order.
  5. Performs and records daily temperature and sanitizer checks.
  6. May assist in keeping walk-in coolers and walk-in freezers clean and organized.
  7. Buses, cleans and sanitizes cafeteria tables, and removes customer trays.
  8. May provide cashier coverage. Operates POS as per established cash, debit and credit handling procedures. Ensures all products are correctly priced and maintains the smooth flow of customer traffic.
  9. May assist with catering set up and dismantling.
  10. Wears uniforms when on duty.
  11. Attends food service department staff meetings.
  12. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Grade 10 and completion of a Work Study Practicum.
  • Basic related experience of one to three months.
  • An equivalent combination of training and/or experience may be substituted for the required qualifications.
  • FOODSAFE Level 1.
Skills and Abilities
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and the general public.
  • Ability to deal with challenging situations with tact and diplomacy and maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or stress.
  • Good oral and written English communications skills.
  • General cleaning knowledge of equipment, utensils, special implements and appliances. Basic knowledge of public cafeteria services and kitchen and food services operations.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily and perform them in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to demonstrate and explain duties to others.
  • Ability to perform repetitive, manual tasks and physical activity for extended periods.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Outlook for email, Teams, web and web-based applications for VCC administrative tasks.
  • Stellar attendance and punctuality.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Neat personal appearance.
